Places such as al-Khod need room for growth. The development of this area during the past 20 years includes the building of the Nizwa road, highway 15, to its north-east Lulu al-Bandar super market and flanking to its west a large housing settlement. Tombs are scattered over the three mountains (600m x 300m area). The Ministry of Defence plan to develop the mountains (Fig. 1) as a recreational facility – the ‘Heritage Hill’ project. This document reports first on the excavation and documents 140 burial structures, the excavated finds, the clearance of stone from the tomb cluster on the southern mountain, figures of the 3D and drawings of the tomb floors as well as thumbnails of the tombs ordered sequentially in ascending order. date: 2023 type: Article type: info:eu-repo/semantics/article type: NonPeerReviewed format: application/pdf identifier: https://archiv.ub.uni-heidelberg.de/propylaeumdokhttps://archiv.ub.uni-heidelberg.de/propylaeumdok/5725/1/Yule_et_al_Internal%20report_2023.pdf identifier: DOI:10.11588/propylaeumdok.00005725 identifier: urn:nbn:de:bsz:16-propylaeumdok-57251 identifier: Juhas, Marcel ; Schlammersdorff, Luisa von ; Weber, Fanny ; Yule, Paul (2023) Internal report of an archaeological rescue operation at al-Khod, Hor al-Ḏabʿ (al-Ḫawḍ, Ḥūr Aḏ̣-Ḏ̣abʿ), Muscat Governorate, 12.01. to 26.01.2023 for the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism, version 1. relation: https://archiv.ub.uni-heidelberg.de/propylaeumdok/5725/ rights: info:eu-repo/semantics/openAccess rights: Please see front page of the work (Sorry, Dublin Core plugin does not recognise license id) language: eng title: Ο πρωιμος Αιγυπτιακος πολιτισμος και οι αλληλεπιδρασεις με το Αιγαιο β’ επηυξημένη έκδοση creator: Konidarēs, Dēmētrios subject: ddc-932 subject: Ägypten (Altertum) subject: Egypt (Antiquity) [R932] subject: History of the ancient world to ca. 499 [T930] subject: Classical Archaeology [FKA] subject: Egyptology [FAE] description: Egyptian civilization first developed in Upper Egypt and later included the Lower Egypt, when geological conditions became more friendly. It is considered to be one of the oldest in history and is among those who exerted the strongest and most lasting influence on other civilizations. Egyptology is thought to have been founded by Petrie and later adorned by a number of other brilliant excavators and scholars. The establishment of a unified political system for the organization of the country, the establishment of a tax system, the adoption of the 365-day calendar, the writing and keeping of royal records, as well as the adoption of measures for the religious-ideological homogenization of the country are among its most important achievements. As a result, this civilization developed to an excellent level, and was characterized by a high artistic feeling, which was reflected in its special iconography. Similarities and parallelisms with the Aegean are present from the very beginning but are more prominent in the Late Bronze Age with the International Artistic Style. date: 2022 type: Book type: info:eu-repo/semantics/book type: NonPeerReviewed format: application/pdf identifier: https://archiv.ub.uni-heidelberg.de/propylaeumdokhttps://archiv.ub.uni-heidelberg.de/propylaeumdok/5337/1/Konidaris_Early_egyptian_civilisation_2022.pdf identifier: DOI:10.11588/propylaeumdok.00005337 identifier: urn:nbn:de:bsz:16-propylaeumdok-53376 identifier: Konidarēs, Dēmētrios (2022) Ο πρωιμος Αιγυπτιακος πολιτισμος και οι αλληλεπιδρασεις με το Αιγαιο β’ επηυξημένη έκδοση. relation: https://archiv.ub.uni-heidelberg.de/propylaeumdok/5337/ rights: info:eu-repo/semantics/openAccess rights: Please see front page of the work (Sorry, Dublin Core plugin does not recognise license id) language: gre title: O Πολιτισμος του ινδου και το Αιγαιο: Ομοιότητες και Συγγένειες creator: Konidarēs, Dēmētrios subject: ddc-930 subject: Alte Geschichte, Vor- und Frühgeschichte, Archäologie subject: Other parts of ancient world (Antiquity) [R939] subject: History of the ancient world to ca. 499 [T930] subject: Classical Archaeology [FKA] description: The Indus Valley civilization is one of the greatest aquatic cultures of antiquity along with those of Mesopotamia, Egypt, Bactria - Margiana and China. It has been claimed to represent the easternmost manifestation of a 3rd millennium interregional urbanization and trade network that included the Nile Valley and the area expanding from the Mediterranean Sea to the East throughout the Iranian plateau to the wider Indus region. Masterpieces of these cultures including jewelry and fine vessels share a corpus of common forms and imagery, demonstrating not only the breadth but also the depth of intercultural exchange along the vast trading network that stretched between the Mediterranean and the Indus river. On the basis of archaeological evidence, the existence of indirect contacts between the Aegean and the Indus Valley civilization can validly be inferred. The two civilizations flourished in this first early cosmopolitan context, taking advantage of achievements made in distant places. date: 2021 type: Book type: info:eu-repo/semantics/book type: NonPeerReviewed format: application/pdf identifier: https://archiv.ub.uni-heidelberg.de/propylaeumdokhttps://archiv.ub.uni-heidelberg.de/propylaeumdok/5495/1/Konidar%C4%93s_Indus_2022.pdf identifier: DOI:10.11588/propylaeumdok.00005495 identifier: urn:nbn:de:bsz:16-propylaeumdok-54952 identifier: Konidarēs, Dēmētrios (2021) O Πολιτισμος του ινδου και το Αιγαιο: Ομοιότητες και Συγγένειες. relation: https://archiv.ub.uni-heidelberg.de/propylaeumdok/5495/ rights: info:eu-repo/semantics/openAccess rights: Please see front page of the work (Sorry, Dublin Core plugin does not recognise license id) language: gre title: A Sasanian equestrian muzzle from Roman Augusta Vindelicum (Augsburg)? creator: Yule, Paul subject: ddc-936 subject: Europa nördl. und westl. von Italien subject: Other parts of ancient world (Antiquity) [R939] subject: History of the ancient world to ca. 499 [T930] subject: Ancient Near Eastern Studies [FAO] date: 2021 type: Article type: info:eu-repo/semantics/article type: NonPeerReviewed format: application/pdf identifier: https://archiv.ub.uni-heidelberg.de/propylaeumdokhttps://archiv.ub.uni-heidelberg.de/propylaeumdok/5314/1/Yule_A_Sasanian_Equestrian_Muzzle_from_2021.pdf identifier: DOI:10.11588/propylaeumdok.00005314 identifier: urn:nbn:de:bsz:16-propylaeumdok-53144 identifier: Yule, Paul (2021) A Sasanian equestrian muzzle from Roman Augusta Vindelicum (Augsburg)? They had conducted plan excavation at important sites at Omani Dibba (large Bronze Age corridor tombs) and at al-Saffah (Early Iron Age (EIA) foundry site), the latter some 45 km east of the border to Abu Dhabi emirate in Mintiqah al-Dhahirah. The object of my visit (16.‒20.04.2014) was to do first recording of the fascinating finds from al-Saffah. Of the numerous (667 registered) finds mostly in copper alloy from that site, I photographed, drew, and otherwise recorded 143, in order to judge the amount of time needed for the cataloguing. By May 2015, some 220 artefacts had been documented. Maurizio Tosi (Muscat) and Francesco Genchi (Bari) kindly provided me the site report and a first database of the finds. In 2014 the ministry had one third of the metal finds restored, which now can be drawn, photographed and otherwise studied. The site is of EIA date, to judge from the finds and radiocarbon dates. I took the opportunity together with ministry inspectors to visit the undocumented Samad Late Iron Age (LIA) settlement sites of al-ʿAtqiyah/J. Ṣunsunah and al-ʿAtqiyah/J. Nejd. Such are quite rare. A further visit from 03.‒13.12.2014 allowed a long-desired opportunity to begin documenting other such sites at Ibrāʾ I0052; Wadi Maḥram/Qariyat al-Saiḥ; al-Moyassar M34, M4304; Samad al-Shān S01; S07, SX; Ṭīwī/al-Jurayf tw0002. Four selected LIA sites are described. Negar Abdali (Heidelberg) recorded key al-Saffah artefacts with a 3D scanner curated in the new National Museum in Muscat. This project goes by the name of the Heidelberg University ‒ Ministry of Heritage and Culture Virtual Museum Project. Most interesting is the occurrence of the finds in what appears to be a single-period context. Never before have we had a context like this one. Artefacts of EIA and a few of pre EIA date evidently were taken as a source for metal production. Numerous new artefact classes occurred. Moreover, a large selection of miniature votive weapons occurred. date: 2015 type: Article type: info:eu-repo/semantics/article type: NonPeerReviewed format: application/pdf identifier: https://archiv.ub.uni-heidelberg.de/propylaeumdokhttps://archiv.ub.uni-heidelberg.de/propylaeumdok/2744/1/2015%20yule%20ministry%20report.pdf identifier: DOI:10.11588/propylaeumdok.00002744 identifier: urn:nbn:de:bsz:16-propylaeumdok-27446 identifier: Yule, Paul (2015) Archaeological recording of Heidelberg University in Oman, April & December 2014, May 2015. relation: https://archiv.ub.uni-heidelberg.de/propylaeumdok/2744/ rights: info:eu-repo/semantics/openAccess rights: http://archiv.ub.uni-heidelberg.de/volltextserver/help/license_urhg.html language: eng title: The ʿIbrī/Selme Hoard from al-Ẓāhirah Province – 30 years after creator: Yule, Paul subject: ddc-939 subject: Andere Teile der alten Welt bis ca. 640 subject: Other parts of ancient world (Antiquity) [R939] subject: History of the ancient world to ca. 499 [T930] date: 2015 type: Book Section type: info:eu-repo/semantics/bookPart type: NonPeerReviewed format: application/pdf identifier: https://archiv.ub.uni-heidelberg.de/propylaeumdokhttps://archiv.ub.uni-heidelberg.de/propylaeumdok/4366/1/Yule_Selme_2015.pdf identifier: DOI:10.11588/propylaeumdok.00004366 identifier: urn:nbn:de:bsz:16-propylaeumdok-43660 identifier: Yule, Paul (2015) The ʿIbrī/Selme Hoard from al-Ẓāhirah Province – 30 years after. It shall be argued here that it rather mirrors a gradual transformation of the self-identity of the mainland élites. The Shaft Grave chiefs strongly took over symbols from Crete, where the palatial élite had a strong religious connotation. This points to the conclusion that the mainland élite tried to establish a more sophisticated system of religious control, unlike the individual and personal cult visible in the MH burials. They realized the potential institutionalized religious authority had as a means of domination, connected with complex and standardised systems of representation, centralization and administration of cult, and tried to introduce this idea to the mainland. However, the symbols had to be modified and translated into a language mainland people would understand, and placed in contexts traditionally used as arenas of social display. These contexts were different from the ones the symbols originally were associated with, since on the MH mainland the grave (as opposed to the Minoan palace) was the place where transcendental ideas were articulated through material actions and expressions. date: 2008 type: Article type: info:eu-repo/semantics/article type: NonPeerReviewed format: application/pdf identifier: https://archiv.ub.uni-heidelberg.de/propylaeumdokhttps://archiv.ub.uni-heidelberg.de/propylaeumdok/89/1/Heitz.pdf identifier: DOI:10.11588/propylaeumdok.00000089 identifier: urn:nbn:de:bsz:16-propylaeumdok-895 identifier: Heitz, Christian (2008) Burying the palaces? Selbst dann können jedoch über die soziale Dimension des Haushaltes, seine Größe und Zusammensetzung, kaum Aussagen getroffen werden. date: 2007 type: Master's thesis type: info:eu-repo/semantics/masterThesis type: NonPeerReviewed format: application/pdf identifier: https://archiv.ub.uni-heidelberg.de/propylaeumdokhttps://archiv.ub.uni-heidelberg.de/propylaeumdok/79/1/Widmann.pdf identifier: DOI:10.11588/propylaeumdok.00000079 identifier: urn:nbn:de:bsz:16-propylaeumdok-792 identifier: Widmann, Esther (2007) Die Archäologie des Haushalts in der kretischen Neupalastzeit: Archäologische und ikonographische Zeugnisse zum alltäglichen Bereich (Daidalos 1). relation: https://archiv.ub.uni-heidelberg.de/propylaeumdok/79/ rights: info:eu-repo/semantics/openAccess rights: http://archiv.ub.uni-heidelberg.de/volltextserver/help/license_urhg.html language: ger title: 'Decadence', 'Decline' and Persistence: Zafar and Himyar creator: Yule, Paul subject: ddc-470 subject: Italic Latin subject: Other parts of ancient world (Antiquity) [R939] subject: History of the ancient world to ca. 499 [T930] description: In light of modern aesthetic thought, the idea of a linear development in OSA from good to bad in terms of artistic merit can and must be seen in a far more differentiated way than previously. Zafar was the capital of the tribal confederation known to the outside world as Himyar, which for some 250 years dominated the entire Arabian Peninsula politically and militarily. The mapping showed the ancient walled city to be worthy of its name with a core area comprising some 1000 x 1200 m. The 2000 season concentrated on the excavation of a late Himyarite cemetery on a mountain slope called al-Asima/Salm. During the 2002 season, a foundation at the southern foot of the famous Husn Raydan was excavated, the site museum was newly installed and all of the inscriptions were photographed. In 2003, we photographed the entire collection of sculptures and began excavation on the south-western flank of the Husn Raydan in what appears to be magazines. Finally, in 2004 excavation was taken up in an area 10 m to the south, where a corner of a large limestone building came to light. Parts of the site were investigated by means of magnetometer survey. Until this time, experts described Zafar as utterly ruined and decadent in terms of its material culture. The foregoing contains the first preliminary report of the fieldwork in Zafar, a project which attempts to illuminate the latter part of the late pre-Islamic period. date: 2007 type: Article type: info:eu-repo/semantics/article type: NonPeerReviewed format: application/pdf identifier: https://archiv.ub.uni-heidelberg.de/propylaeumdokhttps://archiv.ub.uni-heidelberg.de/propylaeumdok/127/1/Yule_Zafar2007_01.pdf format: application/pdf identifier: https://archiv.ub.uni-heidelberg.de/propylaeumdokhttps://archiv.ub.uni-heidelberg.de/propylaeumdok/127/2/Yule_Zafar2007_02.pdf identifier: DOI:10.11588/propylaeumdok.00000127 identifier: urn:nbn:de:bsz:16-propylaeumdok-1273 identifier: Yule, Paul ; Franke, Kristina ; Meyer, Cornelius ; Nebe, G.Wilhelm ; Robin, Christian ; Witzel, Carsten (2007) Zafar, Capital of Himyar, Ibb Province, Yemen: First Preliminary Report: Summer 1998 and Autumn 2000, Second Preliminary Report: 2002, Third Preliminary Report: 2003, Fourth Preliminary Report: 2004. Here a site belonging to the Northern Late Pre Islamic Culture (NLPC), as known till now only from the United Arab Emirates, came to light unexpectedly. This find raises the question of the distribution and character of the different late Pre Islamic Assemblages in the region. At this still very early stage of research the distributions of the NLPC and Samad Assemblage appear not to be mutually exclusive, but rather mix with each other. The Sharqīyah is archaeologically the best researched part of the country. Here and in adjacent Dakhlīyah up to 47 sites of the Samad Assemblage have been tallied. The distribution and character of neighbouring late Pre Islamic Assemblages is sketchy. Whereas the new bowls reveal the art of the NLPC, for the Samad Assemblage still hardly any evidence exists. Least well known is the material culture of late Pre Islamic Dhofar. date: 2001 type: Article type: info:eu-repo/semantics/article type: NonPeerReviewed format: application/pdf identifier: https://archiv.ub.uni-heidelberg.de/propylaeumdokhttps://archiv.ub.uni-heidelberg.de/propylaeumdok/183/1/Yule_Amlah2001.pdf identifier: DOI:10.11588/propylaeumdok.00000183 identifier: urn:nbn:de:bsz:16-propylaeumdok-1837 identifier: Yule, Paul (2001) Recently Discovered Bronze Bowls from ʻAmlah, al-Ẓāhirah Province and the Late Pre-Islamic. But closer examination of the stone reveals that more correctly both diorite and gabbro are manifest. Royal records indicate a source for the "dark stone" of the statues in Magan/Makkan. This is locatable in south-east Arabia, especially the present-day Sultanate of Oman but also in south-west Iran (Potts 1986: 271-285). Samples of "diorite" statues are compared with petrological samples from the Sultanate. The stone of the royal statues need not be exclusively from here since sources closer to Sumer and Akkad exist in Iraq and Iran, although some correspondences are clear between the stone of certain statues and the samples available in the Sultanate. date: 2001 type: Article type: info:eu-repo/semantics/article type: NonPeerReviewed format: application/pdf identifier: https://archiv.ub.uni-heidelberg.de/propylaeumdokhttps://archiv.ub.uni-heidelberg.de/propylaeumdok/130/1/Yule_diorite2001.pdf identifier: DOI:10.11588/propylaeumdok.00000130 identifier: urn:nbn:de:bsz:16-propylaeumdok-1304 identifier: Yule, Paul ; Guba, Ingeborg (2001) Did the Ancient Mesopotamian Royal Stone Originate in Oman?
