Abstract

In this study a closer look will be taken on the incorporation of the territory of the Nawab of Arcot into the British Colonial Empire. After giving a short overview of the development between the years 1749-1801, the focus will be on decisive moments regarding the mutual relationship of the Nawab of Arcot and the British EIC. It will be argued, that the most important motives for the British actions were economic interests. These economic interests will be traced throughout the years. The main thesis will be, that the prosecution of these interests led to the incorporation of the Nawab’s territory into the British Colonial Empire. However, this did not occur at once, but was a process of several stages, as will be shown in the paper. A special focus will be on the possibilities of the Nawab to regain his full sovereignty, especially taking into account the entanglement of the Company’s officials with his famous debts.
