Abstract

In my thesis I generalised the theory of Siegel modular forms, and in particular the results of E. Freitag (compare his LNM 1487 'Singular Modular Forms and Theta Relations'). The starting point is a (finite dimensional) algebra with positive involution. These algebras were studied and classified by Mumford; using his results, one sees that, with the help of tensoring with the real numbers, a tube domain (e.g. a generalised upper half-plane) can be constructed. In such an algebra we fix a maximal order as 'integral', and obtain a generalised modular group as a subgroup of the symplectic group. The later acts on the (generalised) upper half-plane, and with its help we introduce (vector-valued) modular forms. The definition includes the well-known cases of Siegel, Hermitian and Hilbert-Siegel modular forms. After that we use lattices to define generalised theta series and show that they converge in the upper half-plane. The study of the transformation properties of such series under the symplectic group gives conditions under which they are actually (singular) modular forms. The theory of singular modular forms is generalised with the help of the so-called Fourier-Jacobi expansion, and the fundamental relation between singular weights and the singularity of a modular form is proven in this general setting. This done, a finite dimensional vector space of Fourier series, the so-called big modular space, is definied; it includes certain theta series. The problem of the generation of this space by the later series is reduced, using the idea of kernel forms and localisation, to a finite combinatorical lemma. The proof of the later gives as the main result of the thesis the (finite) generation of the space of modular forms with respect to a main congruence subgroup through special theta series.
