Abstract

In this work the influence of solvents on self assembling monolayers of functionalised and unfunctionalised alkane thiols was investigated by nonlinear optical spectroscopy (sum frequency spectroscopy, SFS). The spectra of undecane thiol monolayers in contact with the solvents (D2O, CCl4, hexane) show only relatively small changes compared to the monolayers in air. The films remain well ordered even when in contact with solvents. The influence of linear optical effects on the spectra as well as the angle between the symmetry axis of the methyl end group and the surface normal have been determined for these monolayers. Only in hexane a deviation from the orientation in air can be seen. In contrast to the undekanethiol films, monolayers of oligo(ethylene glycol) terminated alkane thiols (EG3-OMe) show drastic effects when in contact with solvents. In a first step the vibrational peaks in the sum frequency spectra have been identified by investigating monolayers of different deuterated EG3-OMe compunds as well as comparing the experimental results with ab initio calculations. The monolayers on gold substrates clearly show amorphisation in contact with solvents, the monolayers are no longer well ordered. In contrast, the monolayers on silver substrates exhibit a significantly smaller influence of the solvents on the film structure.
