Abstract

Was ist die soziale Funktion der Wissenschaft? Die wissenschaftssoziologische Gegenwartsliteratur bleibt eine Antwort schuldig. Keiner der prominenten theoretischen Ansätze vermag die soziale Funktion der Wissenschaft zu bestimmen (Teil I). Eine alternative Tradition der Wissenschaftsforschung mit fruchtbaren Ansätzen findet sich dagegen in der DDR. Die Wissenschaftsforschung der DDR hat einen bedeutenden Beitrag zum wissenschaftlichen Verständnis der Wissenschaft geleistet. Um die Stärken der Wissenschaftsforschung der DDR offenzulegen, findet eine Rekonstruktion ihrer disziplinären Matrix statt; dabei wird auch ihre kognitive und institutionelle Ausdifferenzierung nachgezeichnet (Teil II). Vom Standpunkt dieser disziplinären Matrix wird die soziale Funktion der Wissenschaft in Geschichte und Gegenwart dargestellt. Die alternative Geschichtsauffassung der DDR-Tradition offenbart Einsichten in die soziale Funktion der Wissenschaft, wie sie die wissenschaftssoziologische Gegenwartsliteratur schuldig bleibt (Teil III).

Translation of abstract (English)

What is the social function of science? Current literature of the sociology of science does not show a response. None of the prominent theoretical approaches is capable to determine the social function of science (Part I). On the other hand an alternative approach of the research on science may be identified in the German Democratic Republic (GDR). GDR tradition provided substantial contributions to scientific understanding of science. In order to reveal the potency of the East German tradition their disciplinary matrix is reconstructed; in this context its cognitive and institutional differentiation is replicated (Part II). Starting from this disciplinary matrix the social function of science in history and in the present is shown. The alternative concept of history, inherent in the GDR tradition, discloses insights into the social function of science to which current (Western) sociology of science remains silent (Part III).
