Abstract

This thesis deals with the absorption of charmonia in proton-nucleus collisions at proton energies of a few hundred GeV. Formation time effects are studied using a model where the time evolution of charmonia in the nucleus is determined by solving the time-dependent Schroedinger equation. The wavefunction of the charmonium is developed into eigenstates of the corresponding spectrum and an imaginary potential is used to modelize the absorption of charmonia due to collisions with nucleons. The starting condition is determined by using the ratio of Psi' over J/Psi, measured in proton-proton collisions. We have investigated the absorption of J/Psi, Psi' and Chi_c in nuclear matter as a function of time and found strong formation time effects for Psi'. We have calculated the suppression of J/Psi, Psi' and Chi_c in finite nuclei. The comparison with the experiments shows good agreement for J/Psi and Psi' at energies of 450GeV. For energies of 800GeV theoretical calculations are in fair agreement with the data for J/Psi, whereas for Psi' there is a discrepancy. Predictions for the suppression of J/Psi and Psi' for negative values of x_F, as well as for Chi_c in several nuclei are made. Measurements will be performed by the HERA B collaboration at Desy.
