Abstract

Jahrhundert angemessenes Ausdrucksmittel.

Translation of abstract (English)

My dissertation analyzes ornamental form in the graphical prints of Max Klinger, with particular focus on the influence of antiquity and Japanese art in these works. Research into the formerly neglected ornamental characteristics of these works expands our understanding of Klinger's graphics which have until now typically been interpreted with emphasis on the content. This illustrates the intellectual and mental content of his art around 1900, as expressed in the ornamenetics. Klinger's ornaments show the discrepancies of the time, but also the contradictions in 19th century art, where old and new, tradition and modernity, occidental and oriental collide, but also form an amalgam all of their own. Klinger aimed to reduce the disparity between antique and Japanese art through the use of the decorative. Through his decorative forms, he brought art and crafts closer to each other, leaving behind much of the gravity associated with traditional historical paintings. In this way he helped provide the industrial 20th century with a more representative, more appropriate means of artistic expression.
