The founding fathers of Complex Problem Solving (CPS) research utilized the advent of computer-technology to connect problem solving research to the affordances of everyday life. During the last decades, this tradition has led to a thriving field of CPS research with interesting implications for a number of applied settings. The goal of this thesis is (re-)connecting CPS research to a specific area of application: Organizational Psychology (OP). To this end, the first core paper of the thesis explores the relation of CPS to one of the most important psychological constructs in OP, namely intelligence, thereby complementing the nomological network of the construct (Chapter 2). The second core paper of the thesis is closer aligned with the practical side of utilizing a construct in OP and considers the valid and reliable assessment of CPS with the help of finite state automata (Chapter 3). The third core paper of the thesis builds on this foundation in terms of construct and assessment and explores the connections between CPS and OP in a discussion of researchers and practitioners from both fields (Chapter 4). In summary, the thesis aims at complementing the current state of insights within CPS research in light of an application in OP and the start of an exchange between both domains.
Substituting objects in pretend play first emerges at around 18 months. Symbolic thinking is involved in this process, as one thing is used to stand for another. Accordingly, it is important to know how object-substitution pretense develops and how it connects to other cognitive and social processes. The current investigation focuses on the relation between flexibility in pretense involving object substitution and object knowledge. Furthermore, the role of basic cognitive skills such as executive functions for object-substitution is investigated. In Study 1, N = 72 toddlers participated in an imitation game involving simple actions performed on everyday objects. It was revealed that flexibility in object substitution pretense increases from 22 to 26 months of age: Older children were more proficient in joining the pretend game with familiar objects that were used in an unconventional fashion. In Study 2, N = 33 26-month-old children were tested with the same imitation game as in Study 1, using unfamiliar objects to present familiar actions. In Study 3, N = 37 children aged 26 months were tested in the imitation game with neither the objects nor the actions familiar to the participants. In Studies 2 and 3, flexibility in object substitution seemed increased as compared to Study 1: Children switched between two different uses of an object more easily. Highest flexibility was shown in Study 3 where reference to reality was lowest. Study 4 referred to data obtained in Studies 1, 2 and 3, but related it to self-regulation capacities. In Study 1, 26-month-olds who performed better in the object-substitution task also performed better in a rule shifting task. In Study 2, the suppression of a dominant impulse showed some relation to flexibly using one unfamiliar object for two different conventional actions. In Study 3, shifting skills were related to overall performance in executing the newly acquired actions with unfamiliar artifacts. The theoretical approach of the current investigation is derived from empirical findings on pretend play development, as well as development of the basic cognitive skills used to organize target oriented behavior. Results are discussed against the background of existing evidence and theoretical reflections. Further perspectives are developed on the basis of the obtained insights.
Prevention and treatment of mental health problems are considered as two major aims of clinical psychological research. Designing prevention programs requires empirical studies that shed light on the risk factors underlying the development of psychopathology that need to be integrated as intervention targets. The current dissertation focuses on personality traits and emotion regulation (ER) as two key elements of theoretical models explaining the development of anxiety and depression. In the first part of this dissertation, the concepts of ER and reinforcement sensitivity are explained and the aims of the dissertation are further clarified. The first two studies investigate adolescent reinforcement sensitivity as a longitudinal risk factor for psychopathology symptoms. The differentiating effects of punishment and reward sensitivity on various psychopathology symptoms are highlighted. In order to understand the underlying mechanism of this link, the indirect effects of ER (Study 1) and anger rumination (Study 2) on this link are examined. Results show that punishment sensitivity leads to an increased use of maladaptive ER which in turn increases the risk for development of psychopathology. The Study 3 takes one step back to examine inhibitory control as an underlying mechanism of the punishment sensitivity and ER link. The findings provide some support for the hypothesis that punishment sensitivity contributes to the habitual use of maladaptive ER through inducing attentional control deficit. In general, results suggest that punishment sensitivity and maladaptive ER constitute vulnerability for development of mental health problems. Therefore measurement of individual differences in reinforcement sensitivity and targeting ER among those with high levels of punishment sensitivity seems to be a promising pathway for reducing the risk for development of psychopathology. Further, our results suggest that targeting attentional control might have protective effects against the development of maladaptive ER strategies. Finally, the findings are discussed and summarized and the implications and directions for future research are highlighted.
Research problem. Patients’ low adherence to medical treatment in chronic illnesses is one of the biggest public health concerns. Hypertension in particular has a prevalence of over 20% in Chile and other western countries, with 30-60% adherence rates for medication intake, and lower for lifestyle changes. Numerous studies have helped understand different patient, treatment, illness and patient-caregiver communication factors associated with patients’ adherence. However, these studies have not been able to fully explain the ambivalence of those patients who ask for medical assistance, but nevertheless fail to follow the treatment as agreed. For this reason, these models fail to suitably predict patients’ future behaviour, only predicting their conscious intention to adhere. Also, they regard adherence as an individual phenomenon, disregarding possible interaction effects between patient and treatment/caregiver characteristics. Methods and theoretical background. This dissertation explores patient non adherence as a manifestation of resistance, using theoretical models based on constructivism and dialogical self theories. It aims to explore, describe and relate patients’ adherence to their interactional patterns with caregivers, their personality traits, their experience with the illness and their implicit constructs and schemas about adhering or not adhering to the medical treatment. In order to do this, qualitative methods were used to analyse 51 in depth patient interviews. Results and Discussion. Two different prototypes of patients emerged: those who keep control and those who give up control of the treatment. Each prototype of patient engages the caregiver in different interactional patterns, some associated with high and some with low adherence. Regarding patients’ constructs and schemas, the main implicit values associated with non-adherence were: self-esteem, autonomy, affiliation, wellbeing, or feeling that the extra effort is not worth it. Finally, almost all patients had both pro and anti adherence “voices”, and they used different implicit strategies to resolve their ambivalence: integration strategies allowed both voices to express themselves and be heard, and was associated with higher and more stable adherence. On the contrary, domination strategies aimed to reject or dismiss one of the voices, and were associated to poorer or less stable adherence. These results are discussed in relation to adherence research and intervention.
Background: Therapeutic intervention programs for somatic symptom disorder (SSD) show only small-to-moderate effect sizes. These effects are partly explained by the motivational problems of SSD patients. Hence, fostering treatment motivation could increase treatment success. One central aspect in SSD patients might be damage to motivation because of symptomatic relapses. Consequently, the aim of the present study was to investigate associations between motivational relapse struggle and therapeutic outcome in SSD patients. Methods: We assessed 84 inpatients diagnosed with SSD in the early, middle and late stages of their inpatient treatment. The maintenance subscale of the University of Rhode Island Change Assessment-Short (URICA-S) was applied as a measure to assess motivational relapse struggle. Additionally, patients completed measures of treatment outcome that focus on clinical symptoms, stress levels and interpersonal functioning. Results: The results from multiple regression analyses indicate that higher URICA-S maintenance scores assessed in early stages of inpatient treatment were related to more negative treatment outcomes in SSD patients. Conclusions: SSD patients with ambivalent treatment motivation may fail in their struggle against relapse over the course of therapy. The URICA-S maintenance score assessed at therapy admission facilitated early identification of SSD patients who are at greater risk of relapse. Future studies should incorporate randomized controlled trials to investigate whether this subgroup could benefit from motivational interventions that address relapse.
Hamilton Rating Scale of Depression in Studie 2).
The present dissertation is aimed at developing a conceptualization and operationalization of emotional bodily experience (EBE) that be clinically useful, and able to distinguish between genders, and adaptive and maladaptive forms of bodily experience in association with depressivity and eating disorder symptoms. It is also aimed at exploring how culture shapes emotional bodily experience of individuals. Thus, a first part corresponds to the development of the notion of emotional bodily experience built upon the phenomenology of the body and the phenomenology of affectivity. Likewise, it was also proposed the hypothesis of the embodied defense for the comprehension of eating disorder psychopathology. Secondly, the development and validation of the Emotional Bodily Experience Questionnaire (EBEQ) was conducted through three different studies: A first study aimed at the operationalization of the EBE construct into a self-report questionnaire, a second study for the validation of the preliminary theoretical structure of the questionnaire, and a third study testing the psychometric properties of the final structure of EBEQ. Finally, a third part of this dissertation was aimed at testing the association of EBEQ with clinical and cultural variables. The methodology used was cross-sectional, comparative and exploratory while this investigation is rising a new variable (EBEQ) which it is expected to be a first step for further research. Two samples were recruited: a Chilean sample of 402 young adults, and a German sample of 50 young adults. Results present a final version of 27 items and 6 scales of EBEQ with good psychometric properties, reliability and validation indexes. Likewise, satisfactory ability for distinguishing between groups was observed. It gives support to the hypotheses about gender differences with higher levels of attention to the body and higher levels of affect intensity of bodily experiences for women compared with men. Likewise, EBEQ showed satisfactory ability to distinguish between a clinical sample (27 females referred to a specialized treatment with a diagnosis of eating disorder (ED)) and a non-clinical sample (183 females from general population sample). ED patients showed usually paying more attention to their bodies, paying more attention to their bodies when feeling negative emotions, and at contexts of public exposure. Non-clinical sample showed an overall significantly higher level of affect intensity of bodily experiences than ED patients. Otherwise, it was observed significant positive associations between depressivity and attention to bodily signals of negative emotions (ABRS), and between ABRS and ED symptoms within the Chilean sample from general population. A significant mediation effect was observed of ABRS in the association between depressivity and eating disorders giving support to the hypothesis of the embodied defense which proposes that ED symptoms express a defense mechanism against negative emotions by means of an increased attentional focus on the body retaining by this means a sense of safety and control. Finally, comparison of emotional bodily experience between Germans and Chileans showed Chileans paying significantly higher attention to their bodily signals of basic emotions and of negative emotions than Germans. By its part Germans showed paying usually more attention both to their bodies and to the environment than Chileans. There was a significant and positive association between attentional focus on bodily signals of negative emotions and ED symptoms with a significant moderating role of culture, while this association remains significant for Chileans but not for Germans. The role of emotional bodily experience on gender, clinical and cultural variables is discussed highlighting the relevance for the development and validation of psychotherapeutic approaches which considers the relevance of bodily experience on the expression of psychopathology. It is also discussed future directions for the study of adaptive and maladaptive forms of EBE and the role of implicit and explicit forms of bodily awareness, with attentional focus on the body taking part of the explicit form.
Child maltreatment is a widespread global phenomenon affecting the lives of millions of children all over the world. As these children grow up to be parents, they are at a higher risk of completing the so-called “cycle of abuse” and become perpetrators themselves. Only very recently, however, the spotlight has been moved from a limited focus on the intergenerational transmission of actual maltreatment on to further maladaptive outcomes in offspring of victims of child maltreatment. Hence, the number of studies investigating the subject is small, and core questions still remain unanswered. In addition, there is a lack of top-down theories enabling researchers to integrate evidence into a broader framework. Therefore, the aim of this work is to extend theoretical and empirical knowledge on transgenerational sequelae of maternal child abuse and neglect by 1) contributing an overarching model of transgenerational transmission of risk and 2) broaden the empirical data base by reporting results of four studies. Study 1 investigates the impact of a maternal history of childhood abuse (HoA) on mother-child interaction in a longitudinal case-control design. Results indicate that the period of developing child locomotion represents a critical time window for mothers with a HoA as they show less optimal mother-child interactional quality compared to a healthy control group during that phase. Study 2 examines mother-child interaction in mothers with depression in remission, mothers with a HoA, mothers with both depression in remission and a HoA, and comparison group mothers. Results reveal that depression affects maternal emotional availability even during remission. Furthermore, mothers with depression in remission and additional severe childhood abuse seem to be particularly affected. Study 3 investigates mother-child adrenocortical attunement in a community sample of mothers with a HoA and their five-months-old infants, matched with a healthy comparison group. Results confirm an association between maternal and infant salivary cortisol levels for the complete sample. However, in the comparison group, cortisol attunement was only significant in mother-daughter dyads, whereas in the maltreatment group, cortisol levels were associated only in mother–son dyads. Lastly, Study 4 examines whether children of the sample described in study 2 differ in inhibitory performance while taking into account their mothers reported impulsivity. There are no group differences in children’s inhibitory performance, however, maternal impulsivity moderates the association between group membership and child inhibition. Children whose mothers report a history of childhood abuse and high levels of impulsivity show lower levels of inhibition than children whose mothers report a HoA and low levels of impulsivity.
Background: Difficult conditions during childhood can limit an individual’s development in many ways. Factors such as being raised in an at-risk family, child temperamental traits or maternal traits can potentially influence a child’s later behaviour. The present study investigated the extent of regulatory problems in 6-month-old infants and their link to temperamental traits and impact on externalizing and internalizing problems at 36 months. Moderating effects of maternal distress and maternal depressive symptoms were tested as well. Methods: In a quasi-experimental, longitudinal study, a sample of 185 mother-infant dyads at psychosocial risk was investigated at 6 months with SFS (infants’ regulatory problems) and at 3 years with CBCL (children’s behavioural problems), EAS (children’s temperament), ADS (maternal depressive symptoms) and PSI-SF (maternal stress). Results: A hierarchical regression analysis yielded a significant association between infants’ regulatory problems and both externalizing and internalizing behaviour problems at age 3 (accounting for 16% and 14% variance), with both externalizing and internalizing problems being linked to current maternal depressive symptoms (12 and 9% of the variance). Externalizing and internalizing problems were found to be related also to children’s temperamental difficulty (18 and 13% of variance) and their negative emotionality. With temperamental traits having been taken into account, only feeding problems at 6 months contributed near-significant to internalizing problems at 3 years. Conclusions: Our results underscore the crucial role of temperament in the path between early regulatory problems and subsequent behavioural difficulties. Children’s unfavourable temperamental predispositions such as negative emotionality and generally “difficult temperament” contributed substantially to both externalizing and internalizing behavioural problems in the high-risk sample. The decreased predictive power of regulatory problems following the inclusion of temperamental variables indicates a mediation effect of temperamental traits in the path between early regulatory problems and subsequent behavioural problems. Our results support the main effects of a child’s temperament, and to some degree maternal depressive symptoms, rather than the diathesis stress model of interaction between risky environment and temperamental traits. Background: Studies on life-space (LS) and its determinants have previously been limited to community-dwelling subjects but are lacking in institutionalized older persons. The purpose of this study was to provide an advanced descriptive analysis of LS in nursing home residents and to identify associated factors based on an established theoretical framework, using an objective, sensor-based assessment with a high spatiotemporal resolution. Methods: Cross-sectional study in two nursing homes in Heidelberg, Germany (n = 65; mean age: 82.9 years; 2/3 female). Changes of location in the nursing home (Transits) as well as time spent away from the private room (TAFR) were assessed using a wireless sensor network. Measures of physical, psychosocial, cognitive, socio-demographic, and environmental factors were assessed via established motor performance tests, interviews, and proxy-reports. Results: LS of residents was largely restricted to the private room and the surrounding living unit (90%); 10% of daytime was spent outside the living unit and/or the facility. On average, TAFR was 5.1 h per day (±2.3; Range: 0–8); seven Transits (6.9 ± 3.2; Range: 0–18) were performed per day. Linear regression analyses revealed being male, lower gait speed, higher cognitive status, and lower apathy to be associated with more Transits; higher gait speed, lower cognitive status, and less depressive symptoms were associated with more TAFR. LS was significantly increased during institutional routines (mealtimes) as compared to the rest of the day. Conclusions: The sensor-based LS assessment provided new, objective insights into LS of institutionalized persons living in nursing homes. It revealed that residents’ LS was severely limited to private rooms and adjacent living units, and that in institutional settings, daily routines such as meal times seem to be the major determinant of LS utilization. Gait speed, apathy, and depressive symptoms as well as institutional meal routines were the only modifiable predictors of Transits and/or TAFR, and thus have greatest potential to lead to an enhancement of LS when targeted with interventions. The increasing popularity of intensive longitudinal designs has also spawned an interest in the analysis of inter-individual differences in within-person effects. The aim of the present thesis was twofold: First, boundary conditions necessary to use estimates of inter-individual differences in within-person effects as predictors for future behavior were explored. Results from two simulation studies showed that under optimistic, but realistic conditions, these parameters can be assessed with sufficient reliability. The second aim was to investigate whether meaningful inter-individual differences in the within-person effect of competence fulfillment on well-being exist. Self-Determination Theory (SDT), a prominent theory in the realm of social-motivational psychology, proposes that such differences should be negligible, but a robust investigation from a within-person perspective has been missing. Findings from an initial set of studies showed that competence fulfillment should not be considered a one-dimensional construct, but competence satisfaction and dissatisfaction should be considered somewhat orthogonal constructs. Using a daily diary study, it was shown that there were inter-individual differences in the within-person association of both competence satisfaction and competence dissatisfaction with well-being (coined competence satisfaction strength, CSS, and competence dissatisfaction strength, CDS, respectively). In the final study of the present dissertation, an integrative study combining a daily diary part and an experimental part showed that the interaction of CSS and CDS moderated the effect of an experimentally induced frustration of the need for competence on negative affect: Individuals who reacted particularly strong towards daily competence dissatisfaction and who reacted less strong towards daily competence satisfaction were most strongly affected by an experimentally induced frustration of the need for competence. These findings challenge SDT’s universality assumption of the need for competence. The dissociation into competence satisfaction and competence dissatisfaction lends further support to a two-process model of need fulfillment that is used as a basis for a dynamic model of need fulfillment that is proposed in the final part of this dissertation.
Background: The objective assessment of global and regional cardiac function in children has shown to be clinically relevant but is challenging to conduct. Cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) has emerged as a valuable diagnostic modality especially in patients with cardiomyopathy or congenital heart disease. However, data on the normal cardiac deformation in children assessed by CMR is lacking at present. Thus, the aim of this study was to provide reference values for cardiac strain and strain rate in children and adolescents derived from CMR feature tracking (FT) measurements. Methods: In this binational study, eighty children and adolescents (age 0.4–18.0 years, 41 male, 39 female) free from cardiac diseases from two centers underwent CMR in 1.5 T whole-body scanners in supine position. Global peak radial, circumferential and longitudinal systolic strains as well as the corresponding early peak diastolic strain rates were assessed applying FT on short axis as well as 3- and 4-chamber views of standard cine steady-state free precession images. Results: The difference between genders yielded no significance for all assessed strains. Yet, all strains showed a significant parabolic relation to age and an even stronger one to body surface area (BSA). Therefore, BSA-specific reference values were determined using a polynomial regression model. The apical cardiac segments featured significant higher peak circumferential but lower peak radial systolic strains than the midventricular and basal segments (all p < 0.001). Conclusions: The assessment of cardiac deformation by CMR-FT is feasible in children. This is the first CMR study providing specific reference values for FT-derived strain and strain rate in the pediatric age range.
The present work makes the proposition that current debates on climate change may overemphasize the motivational focus of prevention in the sense of regulatory focus theory, possibly hindering necessary societal changes, or giving rise to debates around technological fixes such as climate engineering.
