One-dimensional box model estimates of biospheric CO2 gross fluxes are presented. The results are based on measurements performed during the EUROSIBERIAN CARBONFLUX intensive campaign between July 27 to August 1, 1999 in a natural Picea abies forest in Russia. CO2 mixing ratios and stable isotope ratios of CO2 were measured on flask samples taken in two heights within the canopy. Simultaneously, soil and leaf samples were collected and analysed to derive the 18O/16O ratio of the respective water reservoirs and the 13C/12C ratio of the leaf tissue. The main objective of this project was to investigate biospheric gas exchange with soil and vegetation and, thereby, take advantage of the potential of the 18O/16O ratio in atmospheric CO2. Via exchange of oxygen isotopes with associated liquid water reservoirs, leaf CO2 assimilation fluxes generally enrich while soil CO2 respiration fluxes generally deplete the 18O/16O ratio of atmospheric CO2. In the model, we parameterised intra canopy transport by exploiting soil-borne 222Rn as a tracer for turbulent transport. Our approach showed that, in principle, a net ecosystem CO2 flux can be separated into assimilation and respiration fluxes using oxygen isotopes. However, quantitative partitioning is highly sensitive to the respective discrimination factors, and, therefore, also on the parameterisation of internal leaf CO2 concentrations and gradients.
A monitor for continuous observations of the atmospheric 222Rn daughter activity has been improved and successfully implemented in a field study at a Russian site (Fyodorovskoye Forest Reserve). The alpha-activity of the short-lived 222Rn and 220Rn (212Pb) decay products, which are attached to aerosols, is accumulated on a quartz aerosol filter and assayed on-line by alpha-spectroscopy. The alpha-activity from the 212Pb daughters is determined by spectroscopy and corrected for. This monitor is suitable to measure 222Rn activities at hourly resolution down to 0.5 Bq m-3 with an uncertainty well below ±20%. The prototype of this monitor is run in Heidelberg on the roof of the Institute’s building about 20 m above ground. For this site, the atmospheric radioactive disequilibrium was determined between the 222Rn daughter 214Po and 222Rn, which has to be known to derive the atmospheric 222Rn activity with the static filter method. We derived a mean disequilibrium 214Po/222Rn = 0.704±0.081 for various meteorological conditions through parallel 222Rn gas measurements with a slow pulse ionisation chamber. At the Russian field site, continuous activity observations were performed from July 1998 until July 2000 with half a year interruption in summer/fall 1999. During intensive campaigns, a second monitor was installed at Fyodorovskoye at 15.6 m (July/August 1998), and at 1.8 m (July/August 1999 and October 1999) above ground. Pronounced diurnal cycles of the 222Rn daughter activity were observed at all sites, particularly during summer when the vertical mixing conditions in the atmospheric surface layer vary strongly between day and night. The lower envelope of the continuous measurements at Fyodorovskoye and at Heidelberg changes on synoptic time scales by a factor of 4 to 10 due to long-range transport changes between continental to more maritime situations. Generally, the 222Rn activity at 26.3 m height at Fyodorovskoye is lower by a factor of 2 to 3 compared to Heidelberg at 20 m above ground. This unexpected result is due to considerably lower 222Rn exhalation rates from the soils measured in the footprint of the Fyodorovskoye Forest tower compared to Heidelberg. With the inverted chamber technique 222Rn exhalation rates in the range of 3.3 to 7.9 Bq m-2 h-1 were determined at Fyodorovskoye for summer 1998 and autumn 1999 (wet conditions with water table depths between 5 and 70 cm). Only during the very dry summer in 1999 the mean 222Rn exhalation rate increased by about a factor of five. All measured exhalation rates at the Fyodorovskoye Forest are considerably smaller by a factor of 2-10 compared to what we observe in the vicinity of Heidelberg (ca. 50 to 60 Bq m-2 h-1) and generally in Western Europe.
A three-years trace gas climatology of CO2 and its stable isotopic ratios as well as CH4, N2O and SF6, derived from regular vertical aircraft sampling over the Eurasian continent is presented. The four sampling sites range from about 1°E to 89°E in the latitude belt of 48°N to 62°N. The most prominent features of the CO2 observations are an increase of the seasonal cycle amplitudes of CO2 and delta13C-CO2 in the free troposphere (at 3000 m a.s.l.) by more than 60% from Western Europe to Western and Central Siberia. delta18O-CO2 shows an even larger increase of the seasonal cycle amplitude by a factor of two from Western Europe towards the Ural mountains, which is decreasing again towards the most eastern site Zotino. These data reflect a strong influence of carbon exchange fluxes with the continental biosphere. In particular, during autumn and winter 18O-CO2 shows a decrease by more than 0.5 ‰ from Orléans (Western Europe) to Syktyvkar (Ural mountains) and Zotino (West Siberia), mainly caused by soil respiration fluxes depleted indelta18O with respect to atmospheric CO2. CH4 mixing ratios in the free troposphere at 3000 m over Western Siberia are higher by about 20-30 ppb if compared to Western Europe. Wetland emissions seem to be particularly visible in July-September with largest signals at Zotino in 1998. Annual mean CH4 mixing ratios slightly decrease from 1998 to 1999 at all Russian sites. In contrast to CO2 and CH4 which show significant vertical gradients between 2000 and 3000 m a.s.l., N2O mixing ratios are vertically very homogeneous and show no significant logitudinal gradient between Ural mountains and Western Siberia, indicating insignificant emissions of this trace gas from boreal forest ecosystems in Western Siberia. The growth rate of N2O (1.2 to 1.3 ppb/yr) and the seasonal amplitude (0.5 to 1.1 ppb) are similar at both aircraft sites, Syktyvkar and Zotino. For SF6, an annual increase of 5% is observed, and a small seasonal cycle which is in phase with the N2O cycle, indicating that the seasonality of both trace gases are most probably caused by atmospheric transport processes with a possible contribution from stratosphere-troposphere exchange.
The alteration history of the Schauenburg fault has been investigated with isotope and element distributions across the faulted granite-rhyolite contact. The Schauenburg fault zone is situated along the eastern Rhine Graben shoulder, close to Heidelberg (SW-Germany). Major and trace element analyses allow to obtain information concerning the chemical changes induced by alteration. Differences are partly petrographic because the profile crosses the granite-rhyolite contact, but they are also due to different alteration levels induced by fluid circulation along the fault system which has drained the alteration processes. The granite-rhyolite contact constitutes the primary structure. Only the most incompatible elements (Si, Al, Zr, Hf) retain their original signatures and reflect a mixing between typical granite and rhyolite lithologies across the altered zones (cataclasite). The more mobile elements show a different composition within the altered zones (cataclasite) notably a high leaching of cations. The geochemical tracers also suggest at least one strong hydrothermal event with reducing conditions in the altered zones. The isotopic analyses delivered qualitative and temporal information. The use of several isotopic systems, Rb/Sr -, U/Pb-isotopes and Th/U disequilibria, reveals a complex history of polyphase fluid/rock interaction following the Permian volcanic extrusion, showing notable disturbances during the late Jurassic hydrothermal activities, the Tertiary rifting of the Rhine Graben and more recent Quaternary alteration. The granite zone of the sampling profile has underwent an event which set up a new Rb-Sr isotopic composition and reset the Rb/Sr system which originatly corresponded to the Carboniferous intrusion ages. The Rb-Sr data of the granite samples produce a whole rock isochron of 152 ± 5,7 Ma (2s error) in good agreement with the well-known late Jurassic hydrothermal event (135-160 Ma). The rocks evolution lines for Pb support a Tertiary hydrothermal event (54 Ma ± 16; 1s error), potentially connected with the development of the Rhine Graben. The profile samples have undergone uranium and thorium redistribution processes which have occurred within the last ~ 106 years. The samples of the altered zones record a more complex history of uranium exchange with the aqueous phase. This uranium exchange is proportional to the porosity. The best approximation is reached for an exchange coefficient (lE) for uranium ranging from 2,5 E-06 [a-1] in the middle of the altered zones to 2,5 E-05 [a-1] on the sides of the altered zones.
The importance of reactive halogen species (particularly halogen oxides) in the troposphere is due to their strong effect on tropospheric ozone levels, which has been first discovered during surface ozone depletion episodes in the polar boundary layer after polar sunrise (bromine oxide, BrO). Halogen oxides have also been reported from mid-latitude coastal sites (iodine oxide, IO and iodine dioxide, OIO) and from the Dead Sea basin (BrO). Results from the field studies performed in framework of this thesis at Arctic and mid- latitude locations are presented here. BrO and its vertical profile near the ground has been observed during surface ozone destruction in the Canadian high and low Arctic. First simultaneous measurements of BrO and IO in the Arctic boundary layer were performed by ground-based MAX-DOAS, which was developed within this work. The measurements at the Hudson Bay represent the southernmost and first direct observations of Arctic surface ozone losses due to BrO and allowed for the first time to study the day and nighttime chemistry of BrO at high time resolution. Molecular bromine was inferred to be a major reservoir compound during the night, initiating sunrise ozone destruction upon photolysis. The first simultaneous measurements of BrO and gas phase elemental mercury at high time resolution in the Canadian Arctic support the proposed key role of BrO as oxidant for mercury in the gas phase during polar springtime. Further measurements of halogen oxides at clean and moderately polluted mid-latitude coastal sites yielded new field data on halogen oxide concentrations and upper limits at different pollution levels.
