Abstract

Dropout research - one of the fields of empirical research on higher eduction - becomes a topical issue whenever the dropout rates increase. In order to identify relevant prognostic factors for the dropping out process , a model originally derived from American concepts (TINTO 1975, BEAN/METZNER 1985) was tailored specifically to German teacher-training institutions. The central hypothesis of this model focuses on the insufficient integration of students into their course of studies, which may be affected by their initial motivation and commitment, their individual experiences while studying, as well as institutional factors regarding their social environment. Moreover, basic dropout statistics and students' subjective reasons for discontinuing their studies are explored. The problems that arise when determining the dropout rate are discussed separately. The analyses presented in this study are based on data from an exmatriculation survey in Baden-Württemberg in the 1990s. A group of 251 dropouts is juxtaposed to a control group of 364 graduates in order to examine group differences by comparing mean values of the input variables. Regression analysis confirms most of the relevant parameters as predictors of the criterion. The explanatory model passes the validity test of the parameters on the exterior criterion: 'self-evaluation of achievements'. Most dropouts give up during their basic studies. The subjective reason most given is a wrong vocational choice. The analysis of the parameters confirms the negative effects of unstable vocational decisions before entering college. Once the training program is underway, the experienced lack of teaching talents is clearly another precursor of dropout. Furthermore, dropouts fail to integrate socially and academically into college. Their identification with their study program is inadequate. The empirical study is preceded by an overview of German research on academic dropouts with an excursus into the German Democra
