Abstract

The architecture of the 18th century in the area of Temeswar (?Temescher Banat') The thesis is about the architecture having its origin in the 18th century in the area of Temeswar; this territory which was dominated by the Turks could be reconquered for the Habsburg Monarchy. The background of the construction works is the settlement of colonists resulting in the foundation of villages and new colonization. Within the framework of the national colonization the constructions were planned uniformly and managed administratively. The consequence is a standardization in the architecture and in the construction of villages which is characteristic for this cultural landscape. Due to the standardization it is useful to divide the examination in construction responsibilities. At the very beginning the work concentrates on modern settlements, then on military and administrative buildings and the private profane architecture However, most of the work is dedicated to the sacred architecture which is the result of a real construction wave in the recatholized area of colonization Most important are the churches in the towns, the churches built by holy orders and the pilgrimage churches and later on the construction of churches in the villages which is managed administratively. The introductional remarks in chapter I belong to the topic and the problem of the work, source and status of research as well as the perspectives to maintain the buildings of the 'Banater' cultural landscape. The meaning of the 'Banater' architecture is not to search for primarily in some single examples but in its uniformity - in Transylvania this is completely different. Chapter 2 describes the historical background of the construction works during the 18th century: the constitutional positioning within the Habsburg Monarchy, the military, civil and ecclesiastical structures of the rules and the urbane development. It becomes evident that a complete landscape is effected by the national central
