Abstract

Translation of abstract (English)

In Joanot Martonell’s Tirant lo Blanc, the chivalric hero aspires to conquer the Eastern Roman Empire and, at the same time, to control the proper chivalric discourse. Yet, his character is blurred by a complex play of dissimulation and optical redirections. This contribution analyses how the text camouflages the ideological dimension of the Muslim conquest with the help of a specular discourse, an (apparently comical) amorous conquest. At the same time, the vacuity of the hero’s character, constituted by the turbid reflections of his own ‘doubles’, reveals the proper chivalric discourse as a mere simulacrum with an usurpatory potential.
