Abstract

This thesis describes the implementation of an optical double-well potential for metastable atoms with the goal to observe tunneling of massive particles. The theoretical description of the propagation of matter waves in this shape of potential is explained, as well as a detailed discussion of the internal dynamics of this system. There are some critical parameters for building up such a potential. First of all, the angle of incidence between the two standing light waves, resulting in a difference of a factor of two in period has to be measured with an absolut precision of 0.01°. Further on the gaussian beams of the laser, which are used to generate the potential were investigated with respect for beeing homogeneous. The angle of incidence between the atomic beam and the potential was analyzed via bragg scattering and set to be perpendicular. The preparation of the initial state will be realized by an absorptive standing light wave, which revokes the atoms from detection. Finally the first measurements on the double-well system reveals the theoretical predictions.
