Abstract

Translation of abstract (English)

The cosmogenic radionuclide 10Be is produced by the interaction of galactic cosmic rays with oxygen and nitrogen atoms in the Earth’s stratosphere. The production of 10Be is known to be strongly anticorrelated with the solar and geomagnetic field strength. After an atmospheric residence time of approximately one year, 10Be is removed from the atmosphere by wet and dry deposition onto the Earth’s surface. In the oceans, 10Be is adsorbed to sediment particles, bound to which it is deposited on the ocean floor. Based on this theory, temporal variations of the Earth’s magnetic field strength can be reconstructed by the extraction of 10Be from deep sea archives (sediment cores). High resolution profiles of 10Be production rates from highly accumulating deep sea sediments of the Iceland Basin (ODP-Site 983) and of the Bermuda Rise (ODP-Site 1063) were generated within the scope of this investigation. From these records, global changes of the Earth’s magnetic field strength within a period of the past 300,000 years were reconstructed. The 230Thxs-normalization technique was applied to correct for marine transport signals. Altogether 400 samples from the two deep sea sediment cores were analyzed for their uranium/thorium isotopes, 10Be isotopes and selected main group and B group elements within three analytical steps. The 10Be- as well as the uranium/thorium analyses provided the basis for the compilation of the site specific 10Be stratigraphy (230Thxs-normalized 10Be production rates). The analyses of the elements Ca, Al, Ti, Be, Fe, and Mn were conducted on the one hand to evaluate the sedimentary history of the investigated sites and on the other hand to gain insight into the state of the oceanic circulation of the water column at glacial/interglacial stages. From these records, information about potential climatic influences on the 10Be production signal could be obtained. The element analyses showed that there existed a single source region for the sediments of each investigated site. Each source region showed sedimentation pulses which generally correlated with climatically driven variations of oceanic currents. However, the application of the 230Thxs-normalization to the 10Be data of sites 983 and 1063 lead to a valid reconstruction of the Earth’s magnetic field variations. This was supported by the fact that 10Be fluxes of sites 983 and 1063 were compatible with the so called „allowed range“ within nearly all sections of the stratigraphies. Additionally, the recent production rate of 1,4*109 At./(g*cm2*ka) could be reproduced within the analytical error of ± 22% for both sites. However, the most convincing evidence was obtained from the comparison of the sites 983 and 1063 with a variety of datasets from literature. Accordingly, all prominent geomagnetic events could be chronologically correlated. As a result of the above-mentioned arguments, it can be concluded and summarized that the 230Thxs-normalized 10Be production rates of ODP-Sites 983 and 1063 that were compiled during this investigation, reflect the global variations of the Earth’s magnetic field strength for a time period of the past 300,000 years. Additionally, these datasets include the potential for synchronization of other archives via the discussed geomagnetic events.
