Abstract

Clusters of galaxies are the largest gravitationally bound structures in the universe, making them valuable probes for a variety of cosmological studies. The increasing number of 8-10 m-class telescopes enables us for the first time to efficiently carry out systematic investigations of distant clusters at z >= 0,5. However, these studies require large well-defined samples of clusters, which are currently rare. In order to compile a new cluster catalog a unique, homogeneous, and deep photographic data set is used. It covers an area of 22,7 square degree in three passbands and reaches completeness limits of bJ = 24,8mag, rF = 23,4mag and iN = 21,8mag. The search for galaxy clusters is done with a newly developed algorithm, which optimizes the detection limit for each run based on statistical calculations. Applications of this algorithm to simulated data lead to the selection of the most suitable parameters and verify the method´s efficiency. The resulting new sample contains 483 cluster candidates, including 173 at estimated redshifts z_est >= 0.5. A subsample with increased detection significance consists of 296 entries, of which 63 are at high redshifts. The present work contains the largest and most homogeneous sample of optically- selected clusters currently available for this redshift range. Thus this catalog provides an outstanding basis both for statistical investigations of the large scale structure of the universe and for detailed analyses of the BUTCHER-OEMLER-effect.
