Abstract

Translation of abstract (English)

In many European cities a marked interest in puppetry and its staging can be traced between 1890 to 1930, with musicians such as Alfredo Casella, Ernest Chausson, Paul Hindemith, Ernst Krenek, Erik Satie and Manuel de Falla composing works that invented a new kind of musical puppet theatre – an innovative genre which took part in the reformatory movements of the theatre of the period. The four main chapters of this dissertation discuss different theatrical theories of puppet and selected musical works that were influenced by these theories in different ways. Focussing on the French, Italian and German language area, the dissertation throws light on notable institutions of puppetry including the Petit-Théâtre de la Galerie Vivienne or the Cabaret du Chat Noir in Paris, the Teatro dei Piccoli di Podrecca in Rome and the Schweizerisches Marionettentheater in Zurich. The research concerns the intellectual background of the works as well as detailed musical analysis which focuses on the idea of the puppet reflected in music. A synopsis of c. 70 relevant works completes the study.
