Abstract

Due to technical reasons the determination of high voltages through the use of voltage dividers is possible with a relative uncertainty of about 10e-6. Such an accuracy is, however, only attainable with unique instruments available in national institutes of weights and measures. The typical precision is at least smaller by one order of magnitude. An alternative method exists in accelerating ions with the voltage to be measured and determining the change of velocity in collinear spetroscopy. To this purpose a laser beam is superimposed parallel or antiparallel to an ion beam resulting in the resonant excitation of a valence electron. Owing to the ion velocity the excitation frequency in the laboratory frame appears shifted in relation to the ion rest frame (Doppler effect). This shift can be used to deduce the applied voltage. The subject of this thesis is the construction and testing of a prototype designed for measuring voltages from -20kV up to -50kV in collinear spectroscopy. The purpose is to investigate the feasibility and attainable precision of the method and to gain insights that may be used in a subsequent apparatus for the precise detemination of high voltages.
