Abstract

According to most grand unified theories, the universe originally was left-right symmetric. Parity violation in weak interaction arises only due to a spontaneous symmetry breaking at some intermediate energy scale. In contrast to the Standard Model, parity is not maximally violated in these theories and right-handed currents would be a relic of the initial symmetry. The decay of free neutrons is a suited system to study this symmetry breaking in detail and to search for physics beyond the standard model. In particular, the neutrino asymmetry B is a sensitive test for the existence of right handed currents. It describes the spatial correlation between the neutron spin and the momentum of the electron antineutrino, emitted in the neutron decay. In this thesis, a new detector system for the spectrometer PERKEO II is presented. It allows the detection of both, electron and proton, in the same detector. With this system it is possible to measure the neutrino asymmetry B, the beta asymmetry A and the proton asymmetry C at the same time. It also gives access to a systematically very clean measurement scheme for B. The main part of this thesis is centered around the description of the systematic effects and the possibilities to reduce them for a follow-up measurement. In particular, a new method of polarisation with crossed polarizers is introduced. The experiment, being a first test of the method, lead to a new value of the neutrino asymmetry: B=0.967(12). For the first time, a measured value of the proton asymmetry could be achieved: C=-0.233(11).
