Abstract

Essay, Journalismus und Tagebuch sind die primären Gattungen der nicht-fiktionalen Prosa von George Orwell und Gegenstand der Dissertation. Ziel der Untersuchung ist es, Elemente der Kunstprosa in den Essays zu erarbeiten sowie die prinzipielle Anwendbarkeit des Begriffs Essay auf Orwells nicht-fiktionale Schriften bzw. die Affinität mit anderen Prosaformen aufzuzeigen. Zunächst werden eine Definition des Begriffs Essay sowie eine "Standortbestimmung" Orwells, also die Zuordnung zu den Vätern des Essays Bacon und Montaigne, vorausgeschickt. Anhand der Begriffsbestimmung Essay werden essayistische Elemente in der Vielfalt und Vielzahl ihrer Erscheinungsformen sowie ihre Einflüsse auf Orwells Tagebücher und seinen Journalismus nachgewiesen. In interpretatorischen Textanalysen wird exemplarisch die Qualität der literarischen Rhetorik Orwellscher Essayistik, Journalistik und Diaristik untersucht. Ein Subziel der Dissertation ist es, mithilfe der Gattungsdiskussion der essayistischen, journalistischen und diaristischen Arbeiten Orwells seinen Stellenwert als Verfasser nicht-fiktionaler Werke zu unterstreichen, den er als Romancier zweifelsfrei genießt.

Translation of abstract (English)

Genres such as the essay, journalism, and the diary can be considered George Orwell's main types of non-fiction writing and, thus, are central theme areas of the dissertation. The objective of the thesis is to examine elements of art prose in his essays as well as to prove the actual applicability of the term "essay" to Orwell's non-fiction writings and the affinity with other forms of literary prose. First, a definition of the term "essay" will be provided; plus, an evaluation of the literary-theoretical affinity between Orwell and the fathers of the essay, namely Bacon and Montaigne. Based on the definition of "essay", both the wide variety of essayistic elements and their influence on Orwell's diaries and his journalism shall be discussed. By way of in-depth text analysis and interpretation, the quality of Orwell's literay rhetoric with regard to his essays, diaries, and journalism will also be examined. As a secondary objective, the discussion of Orwell's essays, diaries, and journalism shall help underline his value and importance as a great writer of non-fiction that he as novelist undisputably enjoys.
