Niemand wird heutzutage darüber Zweifel erheben, dass die Idee des Guten in der platonischen Philosophie unumstritten eine zentrale Rolle spielt, aber ein weit umstrittenes Lehrstück ist. Bei den seit Jahrzehnten kontrovers durchgeführten Diskussionen geht es um die Frage, welche Rolle der Idee des Guten zukommt, metaphysische oder praktisch-politische oder auch die dieser beiden in gleichem Maße. Die Problematik der Idee des Guten, die überwiegend im Kontext der "Politeia" dargestellt worden ist, wird im Anschluss an die hermeneutische Interpretation, die den praktischen Aspekt der Idee des Guten betont, durch die -von der Sache her gesehen berechtigte- Praxisorientierung der "Politeia" erläutert, wobei die Funktion der Idee des Guten darin gesehen wird, die ontologischen und epistemologischen Grundmerkmale der Ideen zu relativieren und auf die Grenze des Ideenwissens hinzuweisen. Es geht also bei diesem wichtigsten Lehrstück der platonischen Philosophie um den Sinn und Zweck der Ideenannahme.

There could be no dispute that the form of the good is of major importance in the platonic philosophy, despite it being a most disputed doctrine. The controversy spanning over decades revolves about the question, which role can be attributed to the form of the good, a metaphysical role, a practical-political role or both. The problem of the form of the good is elaborated preponderant in the context of the "Politeia". In connecion with the hermeneutic interpretation, which emphasizes a practical aspect of the form of the good, I would like to demonstrate the practical orientation of the "Politeia". It is the function of the form of the good to relativize the general ontological and epistemological characteristics of the forms and to indicate the limit of knowledge of the forms. It is just a question of the purpose and meaning of the hypothesis of the forms.
