Abstract

For detection of organic vapors in ambient air, highly sensitive sensors capable to detect concentrations in the lower ppm range are necessary. Surface Acoustic Wave sensors coated with a sensitive layer are particularly suited for this purpose. This work presents the development of a measuring system for organic vapors based on polymer coated SAW-sensors. Especially the sensor devices and the measuring technique have been advanced. Using a modified inductive coupling technique, it is now possible to operate the sensor in an oscillator circuit. Furthermore, a new measuring technique for sensor applications is introduced. The main advantage of this mode-locked Oscillator is that the operation frequency is three orders of magnitude lower than the frequency of conventional oscillators with the sensitivity remaining unchanged. To further increase the sensitivity, a cyclic measuring technique is used. Moreover, this technique has the additional advantage that sensor drift becomes negligible and thus temperature control of the sensor device is no longer necessary.
