Abstract
This article is a detailed account of the occasion in 1962/1963 when Leonardo's Mona Lisa (Paris, Louvre) was on loan for an exhibition in the National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC, and in New York. It discusses the political implications of the exhibition, which were made apparent in the speeches delivered by the American President John F. Kennedy and the French Cultural Minister André Malraux at the opening of the exhibition.
