abstract_translated_text: Comparing the effigies, plaques, and sculptural decoration on the tombs of Stephen Báthory, king of Poland (d.1586) and his wife Anne Jagiello (d.1596), hypothesizes that the two monuments had been originally planned by Anne Jagiello to occupy S. Mary’s Chapel in the cathedral of Kraków, in effect creating a family mausoleum. Examines the terms of the 1594 contract between the queen and Florentine artist Santi Gucci for the creation of the king’s tomb and the remodelling of the chapel. Offers an explanation for the discrepancies between the king’s tomb described in the contract and its present state. Redates the queen’s tomb, generally placed ca.1575, between 1586 and the early 1590s.
