abstract: Since the first half of the 14th century up to the time of the protestant reformation more and more finds about sculptures of the Virgin with mechanical Christ Children and Pietà figures with mannekin-like crucifixes in their lab have been communicated and commented in scientific publications. The present article discusses the history of ideas about the origins, nascency and dissemination of such works of art and their role within the piety of Western Europe in late medieval times.
