%X The Hogarth print, Credulity, Superstition, and Fanaticism (1762) is compared with its rather different, unpub­lished first state, Enthusiasm Delineated (1761). The published version of the engraving is discussed as a sat­ire on Methodist fanaticism. However, the first state, which is hidden by the second, is revealed as a polemic on shopworn academic French art theory and on a mis­placed, even erotically passionate, enthusiasm for the Old Masters.
