It focuses on their commissioning in Florence of copies of Renaissance statues, especially of Cellini’s Perseus and Giambologna’s Venus-Fiorenza, made by the Florentine Royal Bronze Founder Clemente Papi using ancient techniques. It then discusses the subsequent history of these objects and their importance in the formation in Britain of the idea of Florentine’s glorious ‘Renaissance’ past of the 15th and 16th centuries.
