N2  - My contribution deals with the masks and grotesque faces that often appear in Michelangelo's oeuvre, namely in the Medici chapel, in his drawing "The Dream" and in a copy of Battista Franco's drawing after a lost ?concetto? of Michelangelo. I try to show that Michelangelo actually lost his original face when Pietro Torrigiani crushed his nose. Thus Michelangelo?s face was a mask which later became his trademark and which is emblematic both of his character and of his thoughts about art.
