TY - GEN N2 - The article gives a brief overview of the depiction of upheavals and revolutions in GDR painting and then turns to the Leipzig painter Bernhard Heisig, who frequently depicted the subject of the Paris Commune. Here, the focus is on the extent to which Heisig conformed to the demands of his patrons in his works and the extent to which he took his cue from documentary photography of the 19th century. Finally, the essay also draws a comparison with West German art and questions its function in creating meaning in contemporary art in the GDR.
