Through new extensive archival documentation, the scholar – who had already raised well-founded doubts about this identification in a 2021 essay – demonstrates that the reference was in fact to Giuseppe Caravaggio, a banker and merchant also in the service of Cardinal Borromeo. This banker managed some financial transactions related to the acquisition of manuscripts destined for the Biblioteca Ambrosiana in Milan, which would be inaugurated in 1609. The essay carefully reconstructs the roles of some collaborators who served Cardinal Federico and emphasizes the importance of rigorous analysis of historical and archival sources in order to avoid misinterpretations and distorted hypotheses, particularly in the biography of a prominent figure such as the Lombard painter Caravaggio. date: 2025 id_scheme: DOI id_number: 10.11588/artdok.00009566 own_urn: urn:nbn:de:bsz:16-artdok-95665 language: ita vgwort_code: 9e5fcc03e8de404eb217fdd18c4747a9 bibsort: BERRAGIACOLEQUIVOCOD2025 full_text_status: public themen: T11 themen: T26 title_lat: L'equivoco di un nome: il "Caravaggio" citato in una lettera al cardinale Federico Borromeo non era il pittore ma il banchiere Giuseppe Caravaggio laender: LIt oa_type: gold citation: Berra, Giacomo (2025) L’equivoco di un nome: il “Caravaggio” citato in una lettera al cardinale Federico Borromeo non era il pittore ma il banchiere Giuseppe Caravaggio. document_url: https://archiv.ub.uni-heidelberg.de/artdok/9566/1/Berra_L_equivoco_di_un_nome_2025.pdf
