Abstract

The finds from an archaic necropolis found on the hill of Serra del Carpine – Cancellara (PZ), located in Basilicata - South Italy, revealed all their importance in this research, a binary work that starts from the find, to reach the community, as the central interlocutor. The "genetic code" of the ancient find can be transformed and become useful tool available to communities, for a so-called "inheritance of knowledge" for future generations. A central role in the complex communication between research and the community is played by the museum, in particular the regional museum, that evolves with his territory and the community. His collection encourages the construction of a local identity, contributes to the transmission of the so-called "wir Gefühl". Its relevance was already understood in the middle of the last century by the Provincial Archaeological Museum of Potenza, thanks to the extraordinary work of one of its directors, the archaeologist F. Ranaldi, discoverer of the necropolis of Cancellara. Through the history of the Provincial Museum of Potenza emerges the typical difficulty of some marginal areas, far from metropolitan centers where everything happens and is concentrated. This research investigate the potential of cultural institutions in "re-centralizing" these inner areas through the correct exploitation of their cultural resources, into centers of attraction not only for tourism, but above all for education and culture for the population local. The model of the "Cultural Center" is proposed as a possible solution against the prevailing marginalization of the inner areas such as hinterland of Potenza. The finds from the necropolis of Cancellara analyzed here have therefore represented an excellent starting point for developing solutions, aimed not only at optimizing the contents and quality of communication of scientific results to the public, but mainly at instilling a new mission in the institutions supplying culture, i.e. that of rise to Third Space/Place, as Cultural Accelerator for the individual and the community.
