Abstract

This volume contains five studies which were carried out with the support of the Department of Antiquities of the Sultanate of Oman, the German Archaeological Oman Expedition, the German Mining Museum during the 1970s and 1990s. The book contain a study regarding excavation in the capital area, a prehistoric grave inventory at Aztah/Zafar, a preliminary report of the 1996 excavation season at al-Maysar, at Amla/al-Zahirah, and two grave east of Ibra. With regard to excavation in the capital area, ecology and culture of Wadi Bawshar are treated and the graves and their grave goods catalogued. This includes the Early Iron Age ‚Honeycomb Cemetery’ (c. 1000–300 BC). The discussion includes chronology, burial customs, Islamic architecture and anthropological analysis of the skeletons. It also includes a restoration report.

Der Band enthält fünf Beiträge, die über Ausgrabungen berichten, welche das Department of Antiquities des Sultanates Oman und die Deutsche Archäologische Oman Expedition mit Unterstützung des Deutschen Bergbaumuseums Bochum in den 70er und 80er Jahren durchführten. Es handelt sich um Untersuchungen in der Gegend von Muskat, ein prähistorisches Grabinventar von Aztah, einen Vorbericht über die Grabungssaison 1996 der Oman Grabungen, späteisenzeitliche Gräberfelder von Amla/al Zahirah und Grabfunde im Osten von Ibra. Im Hauptteil zu den Grabungen in der Gegend von Muskat werden Ökologie und Kultur des Wadi Bawshar diskutiert und ein Katalog der Gräber und Funde, darunter ein sog. früheisenzeitlicher "Bienenwaben"-Friedhof, vorgelegt [ca. 600 v.Chr. bis 0]. Es folgen Erörterungen der Chronologie, Grabbräuche, vorislamischen Grabarchitektur und anthropologischen Befunde. Außerdem liegen ein Restaurierungsbericht, das Molluskenmaterial und weitere Gräber vor.
