This paper takes this statement as a challenge. It describes the current technical standard of OSS GIS (Open Source Software Geographic Information Systems) which are able to create volumetric, geo-referenced models of archaeological stratigraphy. In addition, the paper demonstrates the enhanced potential for archaeological post-excavation analysis of the new software prototype in comparison to 2D GIS analysis functionality.
