Abstract

The main goal of our field campaign was the mapping and investigation of a cemetery in which 59 towers of the early to mid 3rd millennium are preserved. Such tombs, which had never been investigated, appear to be a transitional form between Hafit and Umm an-Nar period tombs. This task was important since cultural resources such as prehistoric cemeteries in practice are difficult to protect. A series of interesting observations was possible in addition to this task: In al-Batīn a hitherto unknown kind a slag was investigated which appears to date to the Hafit period. In the western back lands of the Sultanate near Amlah in Qorin es-Sahhāimah graves occurred of unknown type. The preservation condition of several monuments was monitored.
