Abstract

This work aimed at determining the role of bacteria and pollen as cloud condensation and ice nuclei in the laboratory under controlled and realistic atmospheric conditions. By these microphysical processes, biological aerosols can impact on the radiation budget of the atmosphere and though on the climate of our planet. Living bacterial cells isolated from cloud water and glacier melt water initiate ice formation in the immersion freezing mode in the temperature range from 0 to -10°C as well as in the deposition nucleation mode from -15 to -25° C. The maximum ice active fraction of bacteria was around 1 %. Ageing, darkness and cold temperatures did not change the fraction of ice-active cells. Cloud condensation activation appeared at water supersaturation conditions between 0,06 und 0,07 %. Pollen acted as ice nuclei in the immersion freezing mode at temperatures between 0 to -10° C. Birch pollen reached maximum ice active fractions of 70 %. Hazel and sunflower pollen froze at maximum values of 53% and 60 %, respectively.
