Abstract

Gründungsmythen spielen eine zentrale Rolle bei der Stiftung einer kollektiven, insbesondere politischen Identität. Darstellungen aus der mythischen Frühzeit Roms finden sich auf einer Reihe von Grabmonumenten, bei denen eine politische Botschaft nicht von vornherein vorauszusetzen ist. Dennoch wurde aber gerade dieser Aspekt für die Deutung auch in der Sepulkralkunst als selbstverständlich angenommen. Derartig monokausale Erklärungsansätze berücksichtigen zu wenig den spezifischen Kontext der Grabkunst. Die unvoreingenommene, ausführliche ikonographische Analyse der Darstellungen des römischen Gründungsmythos auf Grabmonumenten eröffnet einen weiterreichenden Diskurs zur Verwendung von Mythenbildern im sepulkralen Kontext. Darüber hinaus führt die Beschäftigung mit diesen Bildern zu grundsätzlichen Fragen des römischen Umgangs mit Tod und Trauer im Zusammenhang des Grabes.

Translation of abstract (English)

Foundation legends play a central role in the formation of a collective, particularly political identity. Representations from the mythical beginnings of Rome are found on a number of grave monuments for which a political message cannot be assumed from the start. However, this aspect was nevertheless accepted for the interpretation also in sepulchral art. But these mono-causal explanations apparently seem to neglect the specific and complex context of the sepulchral art. The unbiased detailed iconographic analysis of the representations of the Roman foundation myth on grave monuments opens the discourse for the use of images of myth in sepulchral context. In addition the discussion leads to fundamental questions about how the Romans dealt with loss and grief in the face of death.
