Abstract

The duty-free privilege issued by the german king Henry IV from January 18, 1074 for the citizens and Jews of Worms is the earliest document ever issued for an urban community north of the Alps. The original parchment kept in the city archive of Worms is always of considerable importance in comparative city history research of the Middle Ages. The present work offers an overall overview of the questions and problems associated with the singular document in a comparative perspective.
