Abstract

A model for explaining norm-discrepant environmentally relevant behavior is proposed. For this model, the norm-activation model of Schwartz (1977) and the neutralization model of Sykes and Matza (1957) have been integrated; the integrated model has been tested empirically. Norms, neutralizations, ascription of responsibility (AR), ascribed consequences of behavior (AC) and other variables served as possible predictors or as moderators; criteria were three operationalizations of (self reported) behavior and behavioral intentions. Data were gathered in spring / summer 2000 from n= 204 students of the University of Heidelberg/Germany by questionnaires. The procedure was repeated after approx. 3 months. The results: (1) The relationship between norms and behavior was not significantly moderated by any of the other variables; (2) "AC" neither had a moderator- nor a direct effect on any of the criteria, whereas "AR" and neutralization at least had small but significant cross-sectional and longitudinal predictor effects; (3) Apart from a predictor effect of the variable "personal norm" (what someone sees as relevant for himself/herself) all other variables lost their predictive power, when in longitudinal analyses the criteria's counterpart from the first point of measurement was included as additional predictor variable. The strength of this research is the longitudinal approach and the generation and first test of the integrative model; possible restrictions for generalizing the results are the specific sample (students), the operationalization of various variables by scenarios combined with the low number of scenarios/items, and the sole reliance on questionnaire data (no behavioral criteria).
