abstract: The present study inquires into the current developments at the intersection of fantasy fiction and British children’s literature between 1990 and 2007.  A survey of the historical development of children’s literature up to the 1980’s is followed by the research report. Not only is the situation of British as well as other English-speaking and non-English western European contemporary research in children’s literature and children’s literature criticism presented, but also the influential representatives and their various current approaches.  On the basis of four main characteristics (magic, evil, violence and humour) traditional elements of British fantasy novels for children are analysed.  A trend towards high-tech magic can be discerned, as well as the development of evil towards complexity and ambiguity. Graphic violence crosses borders and becomes a global affair, whilst humour serves as comic relief. Modern structures do not only encompass secondary worlds, but also the modern hero of British fantasy literature for children, their quest and their environment.   Among other things formal innovations concern the question of a canon of children’s literature as well as the examination of phenomena such as allalderslitteratur, single versus dual address and crossover literature.   
abstract_translated_text: Die vorliegende Arbeit befaßt sich mit den aktuellen Entwicklungen in der Schnittmenge von britischer Kinderliteratur und Fantasy, wobei der untersuchte Zeitraum die Jahre von 1990 bis 2007 umfaßt.  Einem Abriß der geschichtlichen Entwicklung britischer Fantasyromane von den Anfängen der Kinderliteratur bis in die achtziger Jahre des zwanzigsten Jahrhunderts schließt sich der Forschungsbericht an.  Der heutige Stand der Forschung der Kinderliteratur und der Kinderliteraturkritik wird sowohl im britischen als auch im weiteren englischsprachigen sowie nicht-englischsprachigen westeuropäischen Raum anhand ihrer einflußreichsten Vertreter dargestellt und verschiedene aktuelle Ansätze beleuchtet.  Anhand von vier Hauptmerkmalen (Magie, das Böse, Gewalt und Humor) werden die traditionellen Elemente britischer Fantasyromane für Kinder untersucht.   Einem Trend zur High-Tech Magie steht  eine Entwicklung des Bösen zu Komplexität und Ambiguität gegenüber. Graphisch dargestellte Gewalt überschreitet Grenzen und nimmt globale Ausmaße an, während Humor als comic relief das Ausmaß der Gewalt zu mildern sucht. Moderne Strukturen umfassen nicht nur die sekundären Welten, sondern auch den modernen Held britischer Fantasyliteratur für Kinder, seine Quest und sein Umfeld.   Zu formalen Neuerungen gehören unter anderem die Frage nach einem Kanon der Kinderliteratur, sowie die Untersuchung von Phänomenen wie allalderslitteratur, Einfach- sowie Mehrfachadressierung von Kinderbüchern und Crossover Literatur.
