Sri Lanka’s independence was seen as a model to be followed in the decolonisation of the British Empire due to the island’s peace, prosperity, indigenous leadership and its preference for British institutions. However, behind this façade the years surrounding Sri Lankan independence also saw the foundations for the vicious civil war that has dominated all recent coverage of this Indian Ocean state. This article assesses how warning signs were misread or ignored and how early political decisions in this era forged the beginnings of the future problems ahead date: 2013-06 publisher: Department of Political Science, South Asia Institute, Heidelberg University id_scheme: DOI id_number: 10.11588/heidok.00015148 portal_cluster_id: p-hdpaper portal_order: 72 ppn_swb: 1652495614 own_urn: urn:nbn:de:bsz:16-heidok-151487 language: eng bibsort: KUMARASINGTHEJEWELOF201306 full_text_status: public series: Heidelberg Papers in South Asian and Comparative Politics, ISSN: 1617-5069 volume: 72 place_of_pub: University Library of Heidelberg, http://hpsacp.uni-hd.de pages: 20 citation: Kumarasingham, Harshan (2013) ‘The Jewel of the East yet has its Flaws' The Deceptive Tranquillity surrounding Sri Lankan Independence.
