"Fluorescent nuclear track detectors (FNTDs), a novel biocompatible detector type, represent\r\npossible candidates for the application in medical physics research. Besides\r\nrecording the particle fluence, they allow for energy deposition quantification, i.e. linear\r\nenergy transfer (LET) determination by measuring the fluorescence signal. A correlation\r\nbetween LET and measured fluorescence intensity was already observed but suffers,\r\nespecially concerning the clinical LET range, from large variabilities. Since a precise\r\nrelation between those two quantities is still desirable, the aim of this Bachelor’s thesis\r\nwas to evaluate different sources of uncertainty regarding the measured fluorescence\r\nintensity. Therefore, a set of 66 detectors was irradiated with mono-energetic particle\r\nbeams covering a LET range of 1-150 keV/um . This results in 22 data points with different\r\nLET values consisting of each three irradiated detectors. Intensity measurements were\r\nperformed using a commercial confocal laser-scanning microscope. The read out of this\r\nset of detectors enables to investigate microscope and detector related fluctuations. Different\r\nread out days and the read out with different laser powers influence the resulting\r\nfluorescence signals only slightly. Regarding detector related fluctuations, the evaluation\r\nshows decreasing relative intra-image fluctuations related to the stochastic nature of energy\r\ndeposition with rising LET. Investigations concerning different read out positions\r\nwithin the detectors result in relative fluctuations of approximately 4%, whereas relative\r\ninter-detector variabilities are much larger and lie in the magnitude of 16%. Finally, the\r\nmeasured intensities and the evaluation of the different sources of uncertainty were used\r\nto establish a LET-fluorescence relation."^^ . "2014" . . . . . . . "Henning"^^ .
