A macho self-concept was operationalized through its similarity to a "Marlboro man" prototype, which had been assessed in a prior study. The first study was conducted with medical students and physicians and assessed their motivation to participate in a stress management course in relation to their self-concept. The second study tested the hypothesis that a macho self-concept influences self-ratings ofhealth and physical symptoms among East and West German university students. Results ftom both studies support the hypothesis that a macho self-concept is strongly related to variables associated with ill health. This association was more pronounced among men than among women. date: 2002 publisher: IOS Press id_scheme: DOI id_number: 10.11588/heidok.00019709 ppn_swb: 1653544619 own_urn: urn:nbn:de:bsz:16-heidok-197096 language: eng bibsort: SIEVERDINGGENDERANDH2002 full_text_status: public series: NATO science series: Series I: Life and behavioural sciences volume: 327 place_of_pub: Amsterdam [u.a.] pagerange: 237-250 isbn: 1-586-03082-5 book_title: Heart disease : environment, stress and gender editors_name: Weidner, Gerdi citation: Sieverding, Monika (2002) Gender and health-related attitudes: The role of a "macho" self-concept.
