abstract: In dieser Arbeit über Goethes „Faust“ wird der Doppelmotivkomplex Besitz und Genuss mit den dazugehörenden Motiven Reichtum, Schatz, Gold, Geld, Herrscher und Knecht sowie Lust und Gier untersucht. 
Der umfassende und systematische Untersuchungsblick ergibt neben grundlegenden Einsichten auch neue, überraschende Gesichtspunkte wie zum Beispiel hinsichtlich des Variantenreichtums des Goldmotivs. 
Ein wesentliches Forschungsergebnis ergibt sich aus der genaueren Untersuchung, wie Faust mit seinem Besitz umgeht, was insbesondere eine geographische Deutung des 5. Akts leistet. Es wird dadurch der Nachweis erbracht, dass Fausts Streben von einem wirtschaftlichen Erfolg, der Neulandgewinnung, gekrönt ist. Entgegen der Ansicht vieler Forscher wird die These vertreten, dass es Mephisto ist, der scheitert, und nicht Faust.

abstract_translated_text: This study on Goethe's Faust investigates the double-motif structure of ownership and indulgence and the appertaining motifs of wealth, treasure, money, master and servant as well as lust and greed.

Apart from fundamental insights this comprehensive and systematic research reveals new and surprising aspects, for example concerning the breadth and variety of the gold-motif.

A central research result emerges at closer inspection of the way in which Faust deals with his properties and this is notably achieved by a geographical reading of act V. Thus evidence is brought forth that in his reclamation of land Faust's efforts are crowned by economic success. Contrary to the position of many researchers this thesis makes the point that it is Mephisto who fails, not Faust.
