N2  - This dissertation turns specifically to the recovered writings of Reverend Adin Ballou, a historically neglected New England preacher, to re-envision and re-interpret what it meant to be a "seeker" during the religiously tumultuous antebellem era in the United States. Using Ballou as a lens, I argue that for both the pastor and practitioner, one's own understanding of religion was fluid despite denominational indentification.
