title: Heliodorus's Aethiopica and the Odyssean Mnesterophonia: an intermedial reading creator: Tagliabue, Aldo subject: ddc-470 subject: 470 Italic Latin subject: ddc-480 subject: 480 Hellenic languages Classical Greek subject: ddc-870 subject: 870 Italic literatures Latin subject: ddc-880 subject: 880 Hellenic literatures Classical Greek description: The opening scene of Heliodorus’s Aethiopica has a special ekphrastic quality, and scholars have noted that its tragic banquet recalls the Mnesterophonia in Homer’s Odyssey. I argue that Heliodorus’s banquet is not only a literary remaking of the Odyssean episode but also an account that stresses its pictorial quality. This new reading is suggested by the vividness of the description and by the echoes of drinking vessels and tables, the two distinctive features of the iconography of the Mnesterophonia, which was likely to be known in Heliodorus’s time (third-fourth centuries c.e.). publisher: Johns Hopkins University Press date: 2015-10-01 type: Article type: info:eu-repo/semantics/article type: NonPeerReviewed format: application/pdf identifier: https://archiv.ub.uni-heidelberg.de/volltextserverhttps://archiv.ub.uni-heidelberg.de/volltextserver/23519/1/Tagliabue%2C%20Mnesterophonia.pdf identifier: DOI:10.11588/heidok.00023519 identifier: urn:nbn:de:bsz:16-heidok-235190 identifier: Tagliabue, Aldo (2015) Heliodorus's Aethiopica and the Odyssean Mnesterophonia: an intermedial reading.
