abstract: Die Dissertation befasst sich mit dem Topos Religionen in der Moderne jenseits von klassischer Säkularisierungstheorie und der unspezifischen Rede von einer „Wiederkehr der Religionen“. Als Fallbeispiel dient die gelebte Religiosität in der neocharismatischen Megakirche City Harvest Church im gegenwärtigen Singapur.
Anliegen der Arbeit ist es, die bereits vorliegende Forschungsliteratur durch eine spezifisch religionswissenschaftliche Perspektive auf die gelebte Dimension einer gegenwärtigen Megakirche zu bereichern und dabei dem wechselseitigen Verhältnis von gelebter Religiosität und globaler Moderne nachzugehen: Wie gestaltet sich die gelebte Religiosität in einer Kirche wie der City Harvest Church und dazu noch in Singapur als einer Stadt, die gleichsam von Anfang an modern war? In welcher Beziehung steht diese gelebte Religiosität zum Kontext einer globalen Moderne bzw. global zirkulierenden Diskursen und Praktiken (die gleichsam die portable „Grammatik“ dieser Moderne bilden) einerseits und dem spezifischen, lokalen Kontext des modernen Singapur andererseits?
Die Beantwortung dieser Fragen erfolgt in der vorliegenden Arbeit von einem kulturwissenschaftlich-kritischen Standpunkt aus. Im Anschluss an die Kultursoziologin Eva Illouz geht es der Arbeit darum zu verstehen, wie religiöse Diskurse, Praktiken, Vergemeinschaftungs- und Subjektformen in globalen und lokalen Verflechtungsprozessen zu dem wurden, was sie sind, und wie sie als das, was sie sind für die Menschen „etwas leisten“.  
Die Ergebnisse der Untersuchung machen einmal mehr deutlich, dass die globale Moderne keineswegs mit einem Bedeutungsverlust religiöser Diskurse, Praktiken und Vergemeinschaftungsformen oder mit ihrem Rückzug in die Privatsphäre einhergehen muss. Stattdessen schärfen sie unseren Blick für die bleibende Bedeutung und die sich wandelnden Erscheinungsformen von Religionen unter dem Eindruck einer globalen Moderne.
abstract_translated_text: The dissertation explores the topic of religions in modern times beyond the classical secularization paradigm or the unspecific claim of a „return of religions“ today. As case example, the dissertation investigates the lived religiosity in the neocharismatic megachurch City Harvest Church in contemporary Singapore.
It’s objective is twofold:  One the one hand, it seeks to provide a nuanced account of the lived religiosity in a contemporary megachurch. On the other hand, it seeks to explore the mutually constitutive relationship between global modernity and lived religiosities. How does the lived religiosity look like in a church like City Harvest Church and even more so in a city like Singapore that has, so to say, always already been modern? How is this religiosity shaped by (and in turn also shapes) the conditions of a global modernity in general (or rather the globalized discourses and practices that constitute the „common grammar“ of modern conditions worldwide) and the particular local conditions of contemporary Singaporean society?
The dissertation investigates these questions from a "kulturwissenschaftlich"-critical standpoint. Following the sociologist of culture Eva Illouz, it seeks to understand how the religious discourses, practices, forms of community and subjectivity that form this religiosity became what they are today in processes of global and local entanglements and what they, as such, „accomplish“ for the people who live by them.
The findings of this dissertation underline once again that global modernity is not necessarily accompanied by a decline of religions or their retreat into the private sphere. Instead, they sharpen our eyes for the continuing importance and changing forms of religions in modern times.
