Due to the lack of evidence, the Life of Phocion has been neglected by most scholars. This study is an attempt to save Phocion from obscurity, which provides a detailed analysis of Phocion's family background, military and political career, and the reason of his death. In particular, this study aims at exploring Plutarch's purpose for writing a biography for Phocion, a relatively obscure man compared with other great figures in Athens. In general, this study will foster a better understanding of Phocion's career, the political history of Athens in the fourth century B.C., and the literary tendency in Plutarch's own times. date: 2021 id_scheme: DOI id_number: 10.11588/heidok.00030998 ppn_swb: 1785182900 own_urn: urn:nbn:de:bsz:16-heidok-309980 date_accepted: 2021-02-22 advisor: HASH(0x55f369191d80) language: eng bibsort: XULANGTHEOBSCURE2021 full_text_status: public place_of_pub: Heidelberg citation: Xu, Lang (2021) The Obscure Statesman: History, Politics and Character in Plutarch's Life of Phocion.
