This thesis aims to provide new insights into the challenges children face during tool innovation tasks by taking three different approaches. First, I describe the early development of innovation skills in the preschool age in more detail by examining three- to five-year-olds’ skills in solving two versions of a tool-making task and suggest more differentiated ways to analyze children’s solution approaches. Second, I analyze children’s private speech while solving these problems to examine which processes on the cognitive, emotional, or motivational level might affect innovation performance. Third, in a training study, I examine whether young children benefit from prior experiences in tool making through analogical transfer. date: 2022 id_scheme: DOI id_number: 10.11588/heidok.00032018 ppn_swb: 1815011521 own_urn: urn:nbn:de:bsz:16-heidok-320188 date_accepted: 2022-06-27 advisor: HASH(0x55f3690fbc60) language: eng bibsort: BREYELSABITHEEARLYDE20220727 full_text_status: public place_of_pub: Heidelberg citation: Breyel, Sabine (2022) The early development and challenges of tool innovation in preschool children.
