This article examines various utilizations of the description of central and south American indigenous peoples in demonological discourse. By means of three closely related examples, I will demonstrate the discursive conflation of deviant behavior in Europe and in America through comparisons and transferences: Jean Bodin’s Démonomanie des Sorciers (1580), its German translation by Johann Fischart (1581/1586), and Jean de Léry’s writings, especially his Histoire d’un voyage (1578/1585). Within this discursive nexus, Léry compares the American Indigenes to European Catholics, whereas Bodin compares them to European witches - and Fischart completes this argumentative triangle by calling for European Catholics to be held accountable for comparable acts in the same way as European witches. date: 2022 publisher: de Gruyter id_scheme: DOI id_number: 10.11588/heidok.00032999 official_url: https://doi.org/10.1515/scipo-2022-001 ppn_swb: 1841938602 own_urn: urn:nbn:de:bsz:16-heidok-329991 language: ger bibsort: PERPLIESHEAMERICANAB2022 full_text_status: public publication: Scientia Poetica volume: 26 number: 1 place_of_pub: Berlin [u.a.] pagerange: 1-18 issn: 1431-5041 (Druck-Ausg.); 1868-9418 (Online-Ausg.) edition: Zweitveröffentlichung citation: Perplies, Helge (2022) Americana bei Jean Bodin und Johann Fischart, Hexen bei Jean de Léry.
