"Solitude can have tremendous negative effects on physical and mental health, including\r\nintense feelings of loneliness, depression, anxiety and elevated stress levels. For\r\npeople suffering from mental illnesses, who already experience social exclusion, prolonged\r\nsolitude can become a way of life, resulting in social deficits, withdrawal, permanent\r\nisolation, and stigmatization, in turn causing individuals to withdraw further\r\nfrom social interactions. The complexity of daily-life environmental factors poses a\r\nchallenge in accurately assessing and understanding the unique social context and\r\nsubjective feelings within controlled laboratory settings. Traditional methods like paper pencil\r\nquestionnaires and clinical interviews have limitations that affect the accuracy\r\nand granularity of the data. To address this issue, there is a pressing need for innovative\r\nassessment methods, especially in the field of mental health care.\r\nA novel approach called Ambulatory Assessment offers researchers and clinicians a\r\nmore accurate and ecologically valid understanding of the dynamic interplay of psychopathology\r\nand environmental factors by capturing real-world experiences, overcoming\r\nrecall and response biases, and providing high-temporal resolution data. First,\r\nthe integration of subjective e-diaries and continuous mobile sensing, which includes\r\nactigraphy and GPS tracking, provides with a comprehensive view of psychiatric patients'\r\nsymptoms and social interactions in daily life, which may not be captured by\r\ntraditional assessments. Second, AA can help identify triggers for symptoms such as\r\nsocial withdrawal, facilitating early detection of changes in mood and behavior and\r\ncreating personalized treatment plans to meet individual's unique needs to reduce isolation.\r\nThird, AA can enhance patient engagement and treatment satisfaction by offering\r\na tailored approach. It can be used to promote effective strategies, such as physical\r\nactivity engagement or social support and networking that mitigate social isolation using\r\nfeedback, reminders, and psychoeducational materials in Ecological Momentary\r\nInterventions. Overall, Ambulatory Assessment (AA) has shown great potential to identify\r\nspecific triggers of social isolation and social withdrawal, to monitor intervention\r\neffectiveness in enhancing social functioning, and creating personalized treatment\r\nplans for psychiatric patients. It is a proven, well-accepted, and feasible tool for exploring\r\nvarious facets of daily life, even during significant crises like the COVID-19 pandemic,\r\nand across a broad spectrum of mental disorders, holding the potential to\r\ngreatly transform mental health care."^^ .
