title: Pero Mexía and the otium of varied reading creator: Folger, Robert subject: ddc-860 subject: 860 Spanish and Portuguese literatures description: Otium (leisure), idleness ( ociosidad ) and labor ( negocio / trabajo ) are central categories in Pedro Mexía’s Silva de varia lección (1540), one of the most influential and popular miscellanea of the Early Modern Period, in Spain and Europe. In his work we see the breakdown of the opposition of ocio and negocio in the context of a new aristocratic ideology. Mexía’s reflections on leisure and intellectual labor shed new light on the nature of the mental sufferings of Cervantes’s Don Quijote, and contemporaries’ views of the hidalgo ’s favorite pastime: reading. publisher: de Gruyter date: 2019 type: Article type: info:eu-repo/semantics/article type: NonPeerReviewed format: application/pdf identifier: https://archiv.ub.uni-heidelberg.de/volltextserver/36544/1/10.1515_iber-2019-0014.pdf identifier: DOI:10.11588/heidok.00036544 identifier: https://doi.org/10.1515/iber-2019-0014 identifier: urn:nbn:de:bsz:16-heidok-365444 identifier: Folger, Robert (2019) Pero Mexía and the otium of varied reading.
